LET’S FIGURE OUT YOUR TYPE!
Do you want to start working as an actor? Well, then you must know your “type”. or “types”.
To put it simply: Your type is the roles that you look like. Like someone you don’t even know, would say, “Oh, he could play that role, he has that look.”
All professional actors know what roles they are a slam dunk for. They go for the roles that fall into their “type” because they know that they have the advantage of looking like that role!
They frequently audition for those roles.
If you’ve been paying attention to the acting gurus out there, you’ll hear all the time, “If you want to work, you need to be submitting for roles that you have the best shot at landing. So you must know your type.”
How do you figure out your type?
Your type(s) is based entirely upon what you look like. Not the “true” you, because after all, you’re an actor.
For instance, do you look like a rugged, world traveller backpacker?
The enthusiastic, wholesome best friend? Nerdy college student?
What adjectives do you look like? What is the “experience of you” when someone looks at you, without you saying anything.
Artistic? Quirky? Searching? Exotic? Educated? Philosophical? Snobby?
Without you opening your mouth, what do you look like?
What is the best way to figure out your type?
We’re going to do this together. Of course, all the answers are not found in your head, but out in the real world.
Watch the videos below and do the “Type me” exercise.
Go with a friend and ask random people to look at the list of adjectives and see what adjectives you keep coming up with. Have people pick adjectives that describe you and what roles you might play just by looking at you. Don’t speak. This is based entirely on your look.

In our Yammer Group, we’re going to WE HELP EACH OTHER.
- RIGHT NOW. This minute. Do this before you even watch the videos! Post a picture of you. Either a headshot or a quick pic you take from your camera. The group will give you feedback on your type from your picture.Don’t wait to do this! Do it now! Are you a go getter or a dreamer? Go getters don’t wait, they do it now!If you put it off, you are re-enforcing the habit of putting things off. People who put things off never get anywhere. (If you are in the habit of putting things off, it’s OK, just choose to do it now. All it is, is a habit. So change your habit!)
- Also, do this immediately! Look through the comments and give other people feedback on their type and the adjectives that describe them.
- Watch the videos below and go out and do the “Type Me” exercise. Then come back and post what people say is your type!
